An Important Update: Haemostatic Abnormalities in Covid-19 and Associated Infections
Speaker
Associate Professor Dr. Nurasyikin Yusof, Pathology (Haematology) Department, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Center
Objectives of the Lectures
The global pandemic of COVID-19 that we currently experiencing can result in severe complications and death. COVID-19 patients are experiencing a tendency towards pulmonary intravascular coagulopathy with strong component of thrombo-inflammation. This is reflected in laboratory haemostasis testing which correlates with severity and outcomes. In this webinar, we will examine the clinical presentation and haemostatic behaviour in COVID-19 patients and other viral infections.
Abstracts of Talk
COVID-19 has emerged as a pandemic worldwide. The primary organ affected being the lungs. Apart from that, associated haemostatic system abnormalities have been observed in patients with COVID-19 with the tendency towards a prothrombotic state. The pathogenesis differs from disseminated intravascular coagulation with a primary pulmonary localization. This is referred to as pulmonary intravascular coagulopathy with strong component of thrombo-inflammation. This is reflected in the lab tests with an increase in D-dimer and the level of which correlates with severity and outcomes of the disease. The basic coagulation tests such as prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) are only mildly prolonged while most patients have normal to increased fibrinogen and marginal thrombocytopenia. Overall, the patients have an increase in venous and arterial thrombotic events especially in ICU patients. Bleeding is uncommon and treated with blood products transfusion. The behaviour of this infection in terms of clinical presentation and haemostatic and other biochemical results may differ from sepsis or other viral infections.
